Owen is doing well with backward skating & pivots, and that strength is starting to show up in more live reps. The goal is to keep making it reliable when the pace rises.

Owen needs to keep developing positioning so this part of the game becomes more consistent under pressure. The next step is cleaner reps that hold up at game speed.

Owen's Skill Build: Positioning

Your drill this week: Defensive Zone Gap Control

How It Works

Skate to correct gap-control positions in the defensive zone in response to puck location cues.

What You Need
cones
Mindset Rep
Lock-In Rep

Pick one detail to watch before the rep starts. Run the rep without adding a second focus.

Your Focus

Gap control is the single most important defensive positioning concept in hockey.

1
Set Up

Mark three defensive positions: strong side, center lane, weak side, with cones.

2
Run The Rep
A.
Parent points to a cone (simulating puck movement).
B.
Skate immediately to the correct gap position for that puck location.
C.
Pause 2 seconds in correct stance, then parent points to next position.
3
Check It

Beat the puck to the position, if you're reacting after it's already too late

Goal

You've got it when you reach the correct gap position and hold your stance for a 2-count before the parent points again, 13 of 15 reps.

Helpful Cues
Beat the puck to the position, if you're reacting after it's already too lateStay between the puck and the net, alwaysDon't overcommit: maintain a gap you can skate through quickly
UPLVL IT

Parent calls two consecutive positions, skate to one, touch it, immediately skate to the next.

UpLVL Assessment
6 session notes and 8 skills interpreted for Owen's development
UpLVL
Owen looked more connected shift to shift, and Skating and Defense are starting to show up in the moments that matter. Those strengths are giving Owen more control in games, which is helping her skate into better positions, make stronger reads, and execute more reliably under pressure. Owen is in the competitive range, with Skating is leading the way. Because Owen has been moving in the right direction, the next push is Positioning and Clearing, especially as the pace rises and decisions have to happen faster. If that work keeps moving toward the current strengths, Owen's game should feel more complete, more balanced, and more repeatable from one session to the next. That next step should also keep decision-making in view, so the work reflects what is showing up in play as well as the ratings.
Guide
How To Read The Ratings

Each skill gets a 1-10 rating that maps to a milestone, helping track skill development and player growth over time.

Skill Milestones

Milestones show progress in a specific skill. Players usually move through milestones with age, practice, and better game understanding.

Overall Development Stage

Stages describe the player's broader development level. They are based on the overall rating, which averages the skill ratings in the report.

A player can be at different milestones in different skills while still having one overall stage for the report. The value is seeing what changed from one evaluation to the next.

Hover or tap any stage or milestone below for the parent-facing meaning.
Early StageOverall stageMilestones 1-2Ratings 1-3.99

The player is building the base. Coaches are looking for understanding, effort, and cleaner reps before expecting the skill to show up consistently in games.

Latest Session Note
Coach BlakeMar 31
Rating 7.4
Owen looked more connected shift to shift. Skating and Defense were the clearest separators in this session and created more control in the game. The next push is Positioning and Clearing so that level holds when the pace lifts, the decisions get tighter, and the game becomes less forgiving.
